Michael Coleby
Michael Coleby graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in music. Formerly a cellist in the National Youth Orchestra Of Great Britain, Michael's passion for conducting flourished during his final year at Bristol University when he conducted the University Opera Society in a production of Mozart’s Magic Flute, under the guidance of Sir Roger Norrington. Michael has taken part in masterclasses with Martyn Brabbins, Sian Edwards, Atso Almila and Sir Roger Norrington.
In 2017 Michael made his professional debut conducting the Deutsche Sinfonie -Orchester Berlin, alongside music director Robin Ticciati, in a performance of Charles Ive’s ‘unanswered questions’ at the Berlin Atonal Festival. Michael has since been invited back, to the DSO to conduct the academy orchestra. As an assistant Michael has worked with the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Orquestra Castile y Leon including concerts at Snape Maltings, Valladolid and Madrid. During 2019-20 Michael will work as an assistant with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski in two concert performances at the South Bank Centre and a new recording for the LPO label.
Michael has formed a particular interest in contemporary music. During 2018-19 Michael was part of the Inaugural study programme ‘NEXT’ with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Throughout the year, Michael had the opportunity to work with composers Brian Ferneyhough, Rebecca Saunders and Dai Fujikura with performances broadcast on both Radio France Musqiue and the BBC Radio 3 ‘New Music Show’. The year culminated in November 2019, with a performance of Stockhausen’s Zeitmaße and Boulez Derive 1.
